One of the best ways to boost community engagement within your property is to organize events around holidays or seasonal celebrations. One such holiday perfect for celebrating in your building is Cinco de Mayo.

While it is treated as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in the US, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexicans’ win over the more extensive and better prepared French army in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Battle of Puebla was just one battle in a war between France and Mexico that lasted until 1867, but it was a great symbolic victory at the time for the besieged Mexicans. And years later, it came to represent the power and conviction of the indigenous Mexican people and culture, which is why it is still celebrated in parts of Mexico and the United States today.

That said, there are plenty of ways to highlight Mexican culture that are fun and engaging for your residents. You can throw a party, providing food from local Mexican restaurants or vendors. You can offer a dance class to teach residents traditional Mexican folk dancing or a musical presentation in which they can learn about mariachi. An interactive event, such as a class in which residents make their Mexican crafts or folk art or a cooking demo in which they get to build their tacos, could also be great ways to get residents out of their apartments and socialize with their neighbors.

The good news: It’s not too late to get one of these events scheduled for Cinco de Mayo this year, and Power for Life Fitness can help you do it! For more information, please send us an email at info@powerforlifefitness.com today.
